The kids get a dog from the pound, thinking it will be the perfect present for Bernie. Bernie finds the dog, hides it, thinking it is the perfect present for the kids. They think he took it back to the pound, so they try and get revenge.

Pacey offers to cook for the gang on their weekly dinner (an event they always plan on doing but always fail to). Jen and Dawson return early and decide to keep what happened between them, but they are caught by everyone making out at the door. The dinner goes on in a very awkward way for everyone as Audrey and Dawson worry about Joey. But surprisingly she seems to be fine with it. Charlie also drops by, causing some tension for Dawson. At the end, they all decide that keeping their long lasting friendships is more important than having a weekly dinner, and Joey confesses to Pacey how she really feels about the whole Dawson-Jen thing.

Polly Draper ("thirtysomething") guest stars Both Nick and his child advocacy boss, Alvin, face Nick's father, Burton, in court. Nick, who is now working for Burton's competitors, Kirk and McGee, faces him when he is reassigned to Hunter -- the young boy who witnessed his father kill his mother -- after Hunter's father's controversial verdict comes in. Meanwhile, Alvin agrees to defend his ex-wife (Draper), for whom he still has some unresolved feelings, in a wrongful termination case, only to realize that the company they are suing is represented by Burton.

That night, Doug can't perform because he is under pressure by his parents and Arthur.

Nikki gets into the Yuletide spirit and prepares her annual Christmas tree-trimming party, but everyone turns her invitations down flat. To lift her spirits, she visits the mall to do her last-minute shopping. When the Santa Claus at the mall suddenly deserts the anxious children waiting to have their pictures taken, Nikki seizes the moment by pretending to be Santa. Just as the mall begins to close, Nikki, Kim, Andell, Stevie, T and Professor Oglevee all end up locked in the department store after being coaxed by a strange man named Walter. Nikki tries to cheer everybody up, but they all seem bothered and grumpy. After a hectic ""Secret Santa"" gift exchange, Nikki becomes upset with everyone's bickering. Realizing how childish they have become, everyone gathers around Nikki and apologize. When the security guard comes to the rescue, Nikki reveals a description of Walter, but it turns out that no one by that name is employed at the mall. The next day, everyone exchanges gifts. Once again Breanna's mother has come over for the holidays. This time she feels sick. Later on Flex's whole family comes over for Christmas, and Breanna's grandma discovers that Nicole is pregnant. Breanna overhears and tells Flex. At first their all happy about it thinking that it's a miracle, but when she takes a pregnancy test she realizes that there's no baby, but Breanna says that there's still a miracle because her parents are together for Christmas.

Stan gives Maya an expensive watch for Christmas. Joan tells her to give it back to him, but she refuses. When Darnell sees the watch, Maya claims it is a gift from Joan, leaving him infuriated. Meanwhile, Vosco finally packs up and leaves for good after Lynn criticizes his Christmas present to her--a dog. William is excited about playing Santa for the office Christmas party, but experiences unexpected problems after getting a stain on the suit.

Greg's and Kim's parents all spend Christmas at the Warner house this year. Not all is merry when a discussion about how every child has their 'A' set of grandparents (the ones they love) and their 'B' set (the ones they like) makes Greg realize his parents, Tom and Natalie, aren't Sam's 'A' set. When Greg sees Sam having a great time with Don and Jenny, he snatches Sam away from them, then tries to make his parents play with him. But Tom and Natalie are so dull and awkward around kids that Greg talks to Kim about it. She tells him it's not Sam's fault that Tom and Natalie are meek. Greg turns it into a competition, insistent on making his folks the 'A' grandparents. No matter what he orders them to do to win Sam over, Don and Jenny are one step ahead of him. When Malcolm and his brothers destroy their Christmas tree ornaments, Lois punishes them by canceling Christmas and moves all the presents into the garage. The only way she will reinstate the holiday is if the boys behave impeccably up to Christmas morning. Her plan works better than expected, and Lois is touched that her family responded so well to her challenge. Meanwhile, the boys decide that Lois could use this tactic for future holidays and retaliate by breaking into the garage and opening up all the presents.
