The Man with the Yellow Hat has a hobby playing the tuba in Rescue Squad 86's firehouse band. George becomes excited at the thought of a band, but the Man will not let George play his tuba. George then decides to make his own instruments and that his animal friends will be the ones playing them. The only problem is that his animal friends seem to get distracted too easily and, after causing a loud racket on the roof of the apartment building where they are practicing, someone calls the fire department.

On an assignment to return a career safe breaker from prison for further questioning, Tyler, Ray and Chris are attacked by robbers and the man who they were taken in for questioning is broken out. Meanwhile, Sam tries to break in the first black detective in the department, a man who will later become Sam's mentor when he first joins the police force.

Brian McAfee is a newly-divorced father of four children living a lonely, isolated life in Alaska. Brokenhearted and bewildered, Brian has shut himself off from the world and even his own children in many ways. He doesn't know any of his neighbors or his kids' teachers. He's uncomfortable doing girly things with his daughters, which has left a big gap in their relationship with him, especially for the oldest, Ellie (9). Brian's also baffled by his son's troubles with schoolwork, their house is a disaster, and all four kids have serious behavior problems because there's no discipline at home.
