They go back from the Ice Age and various other time periods where the animals were either hunted or had their habitats destroyed by humans resulting in their extinction or becoming endangered. This episode is used to educate both of the past, present, and future for the viewers it explains how we can have everything one day and lose everything later.

Dexter helps Mo-Ron phone home, and soon all is well-that is, until the long distance charges roll in.

Dr. Sam Stein has always lived for his work. His dedication has paid off with the development of the Computer Aided Visual Environment system of CAVE, which allows doctors to jack-in directly to the brain of patients. When an accident puts his colleague Rachael Carter in a coma, Stein decides to use CAVE for his own purposes, reaching into Rachael's brain to tell her what he couldn't while she was conscious: that he loves her. Stein discovers, however, that love takes strange turns when it enters CAVE's virtual world and that the complexities of the human heart are not easily translated into bits and bytes.

This case brings out some information about Meldrick's family, and he tries to see his brother, who doesn't want to see him. Kay tries to keep the identity of her new boyfriend a secret, mainly from John, which drives him crazy. Pembleton and Bayliss investigate the death of a man whose body is found in a car. Scheiner says he died from internal bleeding, not the gunshot wound to the groin he was treated for at an emergency room earlier that day. They discover that the doctor may have had a motive for doing a less than adequate job treating her patient.
