A young man, Graham, inherits his uncle's collection of native art, including an African black magic doll which he and his girlfriend, Sarah, call 'Charlie Boy'. Ignorant of its power, Graham inadvertently uses 'Charlie Boy' to kill a dangerous driver but also accidentally sets in motion a fatal curse directed at those closest to him.

Commencing transmission on 11 April 1980, the series is notable for being the first British series to feature a female police detective as its leading character, ahead of the similarly themed BBC series Juliet Bravo by four months.

At Max’s bar, Franz is confronted by an old acquaintance named Dreske. Dreske and his friends sing “The Internationale” to provoke Franz. They nearly come to blows before Franz collapses in a fit.

In 1928 Berlin, Franz Biberkopf is released after serving four years in Tegel prison for killing his girlfriend Ida. After settling into his old apartment he visits Minna, Ida’s sister. Minna succumbs to his forceful advances. In a flashback we see Franz kill Ida with a cream whip after suspecting she was going to leave him. Franz later runs into his old friend Meck and has a drink with him in Max’s bar, a local place. There he meets a young Polish woman named Lina who moves in with him.

After saving a old man named Tyron from the rat-like Groundlings, Thundarr, Ariel and Ookla learns that the Groundlings are in search of The Black Pearl, which the evil wizard Gemini fears it's power. Thundarr, Ariel and Ookla agrees to deliver the Black Pearl to the village of Manhat (the ruins of Manhattan). But Ariel is captured and taken to Gemini's tower and Gemini demands that Thundarr and Ookla gives him the Black Pearl or Ariel will die.
