The episode opens in Africa with the scene of a lion chasing a leopard. As the two fight, a huge gorilla enters. Broken shackles dangle from the gorilla's wrists. Speed is flying to Africa. Professor Robert Carnivoré is sitting next to Speed on the plane. He relates the story of a huge monster that lives near the mountain they're flying over. Speed will be participating in the Trans-Africa Grand Prix, a race which crosses the continent of Africa. He checked out the course and is on his way to Nairobi where the race will start. The pilot and co-pilot point weapons at the professor and Speed. They are exiles from the nation of Bangdabongo. Carnivoré is also an ex-pat from Bangdabongo. The men need the professor's help to liberate their country which was taken over 20 years before. The men and the professor get parachutes to jump out safely. Speed is tied up. Speed gets chased to the edge of a cliff. The gorillas throw boulders at him and one knocks him off the cliff. General Smasher, who is watching Speed on the monitors is happy to be rid of ""that nosy young man"" once and for all. Smasher resembles Hitler, another fun-loving character from the 1940s. In order to secure Professor Carnivoré's cooperation, Smasher leads him into a room where he meets a former colleague, Professor Loon. Professor Loon shows off a giant gorilla. The gorilla often bites through the chains and escapes. Loon is summoned to the command post because the Mach Five is approaching the island. As the Mach Five approaches the island, a door opens underwater and the car is sucked inside. As Trixie and Spritle reach the end of a long tunnel, tanks are waiting for them. The tanks chase the Mach Five and Trixie's driving skills, which are at least as good as her flying skills, pan out and the car crashes. They are captured for Professor Loon's experiments. Will is conducting an experiment in a cave and captures a man who claims to be the man who controls time for the entire universe. This ""Time Merchant"" takes Will, Professor Robinson, Smith, and the Robot, to his secret lair. From there, Smith uses the Time Merchant's time machine to return himself to Earth on the day the Robinson's departed, with the objective of NOT sabotaging the Jupiter II mission and letting the Robinsons go on their way to Alpha Centauri. The Time Merchant then announces that if Smith does not get on the Jupiter II, the ship will not fly off course and will therefore be destroyed by a collision with an asteroid several months after liftoff. So Will is sent back to join Smith and try to convince him to get on the Jupiter II as he originally did.

John Cannon and Billy Blue are captured by Apaches far from home and made to face death from lack of water. John and Billy force a wounded Indian, Klosen, to lead them toward water but the Apache escapes. Buck and Manolito catch a glimpse of a war party wearing John's and Billy's hats but harsh desert winds make it impossible to track the missing pair. When John and Billy do find water, renegade Chief Soldado ties them to a rock to die of thirst.

Nicholas Groat, a grandmaster chessplayer, organizes a team that plans to steal gold intended for the underground in an Eastern bloc country that was intercepted by the country's authorities. The IMF must recover the gold from the authorities and keep Groat from getting it. Groat forces the authorities to move the gold from a bank to a vault at the hotel where he (and Rollin) are playing in a tournament. The hotel puts a time lock on the vault for extra security, but Groat notices that Rollin is cheating, using a hearing aid. When he forces Rollin to demonstrate, the computer ""inadverently"" accelerates timepieces, so Groat wants to use it to get into the vault. Rollin agrees, but requires Groat use his team. Willy fakes a typhoid outbreak and Dr. Phelps administers shots to the guards which are actually sedatives. With Groat's help they get into the vault, then take the gold at gunpoint and leave him there.
