We’re caught in the nocturnal world of the all-night café. Joyce, a very pregnant young waitress, is our way in. A man from her past, Eddie Barrow, appears as if from nowhere with a pressing urgency to tell his story. Joyce wants us to hear it. Eddie tells us a love story – a strange, Gothic, warped and weird love story. He tells us about Effie, the old lady who lives in a room opposite his in a boarding house. Effie is a remarkable, magical woman. However, she needs raw meat to survive.
There's a sense that time is running out. Our narrator, Simon, is like a man sinking in quicksand. He’s a man of routine. Rising, dressing, travelling to work on the DLR. Every day is the same. His sense of self is slipping away as he becomes (perhaps literally) someone else. It's a similar story for Dr Benham, stuck in his STD clinic watching a parade of patients come and go. In his parallel story of metamorphosis he’s being spat out by his own life. He too is becoming a different person, from the feet up.

Carpenter Jeff Devlin meets up with Chris and Catherine, who own an amazing stone home built in 1760. The original home is flanked by two additions, one of which is an 1800s Center Colonial farmhouse, which is a style of house that features two identical spaces meant for entertaining. They ask Jeff to turn one space into a classic parlor with a bar area, and the other into a billiards room. They build an amazing bar with a mahogany top, restore an original mantel piece and Jeff works with a local blacksmith to create a custom light fixture to go over the pool table.
Carpenter Jeff Devlin heads to the 1729 home of Siobhan and Brian, to take a look at the kitchen and living room additions to their home. The kitchen space was added in the 1800s, but then fell victim to a really bad 1980s remodel. It even has horrible indoor/outdoor carpet as flooring. The living room was added with the 1980s renovation, and is chock full of bad wood paneling. He brings in reclaimed barn beams to create a threshold in between the rooms, adds a unique blend of rustic cabinetry and makes a coffee table out of a surprise piece he finds on the property.
