Bobby and Lindsay lay the groundwork for the Pearson trial. George Vogelman, the podiatrist that answered Ellenor's personal ad (episodes #5, #12), comes into the office with a severed head in his medicine bag. Ellenor and Eugene try to determine what to do with Vogelman. Jimmy and Rebecca defend Jesse Manning, an elderly man accused of plotting to murder his wife. The prosecution's case is based solely on evidence of his step-by-step drawings of the murder and an intricately devised plan for the perfect murder.

Still recovering from the loss of Elizabeth the family begins to fall apart in some ways. Jimmy confesses about how much he did love Elizabeth, and while trying to hide from her own fears, Laura becomes addicted to laudanum. Emily tries her best to convince the Scottish relatives that she will give them everything she owns in exchange for New Moon, only to receive a reply saying the they are coming to P.E.I. to claim it.

After being struck by the fatal lightning storm a year before, computer genius Kieran Keyes created a living internet called the Ultraweb. After discovering the true identity of NightMan, Keyes lures Johnny's father Frank Dominus into the Ultraweb, ultimately creating a showdown between father and son - Dominus only knowing NightMan as Bay City's masked vigilante. NightMan threatens to put Keyes out permanently if he doesn't spare Frank's life and release him from the Ultraweb's confines. Keyes agrees to send Frank back, killing him in the process. NightMan makes a new archenemy.

Unfortunately, Kel can't seem to hold on to a yo-yo he's purchased for his date, and as a result the guys find themselves with their heads stuck in a fence.

A group of Gotham City youths tell their stories about what they believe the Dark Knight to really be like. One story is reminiscent of the Dick Sprang era comics from the 1950s and/or the 1960s live-action Batman television series. Another is reminiscent of Frank Miller's 1986 graphic novel The Dark Knight Returns.
