The hot Santa Ana desert winds stir up more troubles for the Baywatch lifeguards when a typical day begins with a large hole appearing on the beach, as well as an uncharted sand bar, the lifeguard trucks disappearing and then reappearing buried in the sand. Also, mysterious deaths of sea lions point to a giant electric eel living in the Zuma Beach caves.

Annie's former mentor from New Jersey is coming to town especially to see her star pupil in Cats, unaware that Annie quit the show. Annie begs Caroline to accompany them to dinner, where they learn that Miss McGowan has recently lost over 150 pounds, but immediately begins to overeat when Annie attempts to explain - so an uncharacteristically timid Annie must beg the producer for her job back for just one golden evening for Miss McGowan, abetted by an old programme supplied by Del. Meanwhile, Richard joins Charlie as an experimental guinea pig for testing new drugs (""We prefer the term biosluts.""), but a new antihistamine soon has them both convinced that Richard's furniture is staring at them.

Eric agrees to cease his takeover of the restaurant and jazz club if Amanda sleeps with him. Megan quits her job after learning of the offer. She shares the news with Taylor, who tries to blackmail Amanda into going through with it. Someone torments Michael by planting items that belonged to Kimberly around his home and office. Peter and Lexi tell him about Brett's relationship with Kimberly. Michael confronts Brett, who is arrested for punching him. Michael's stalker fires shots at him at the beach house. Craig gives Jennifer a car as a reward for her success in promoting the cauterizer at a medical supplies convention. Lexi hides a pill addiction from Peter. Sam demands an expensive wedding dress.

A man in Kelly's Vietnam unit is burned. It seems to have something to do with the accidental bombing of a village in which 30 or 40 civilians were killed. Kelly was in the hospital during the day of the raid. The operations officer, Joe Damian, got the coordinates wrong, and was tried, but considers himself a scapegoat. Kelly talks to another man from the unit, ""Jer"" Jeremy Britt who winds up dead from a car bomb. Kelly gets a photo of the bombing which is a threat that he is next. Janine's romance with Zach is interupted when Bobby happily horns in using the excuse that he is her bodyguard.

In return for this, the Cigarette-Smoking Man asks that Mulder quit the FBI and work for him in the Syndicate where he could have power and respect which Mulder turns down, deciding to stay on the side of justice. While Scully's cure appears to have worked, the Cigarette-Smoking Man faces his own enemies and disappears, presumed dead.
