She again turns to Congressman Sam Greene for help and is now ready to pay the price he demands of her. Now living under a false name, Madeline makes the acquaintance of a handsome rogue. Orry meanwhile has hired a Pinkerton's detective to try and track her down. With state's rights advocates continuing their battle with President Davis over his ever-growing authority, Bent sees himself as the future President of the Confederacy and recruits James Hontoon to be his Vice President.

Jonathan helps a brainy but severly obese girl named Jenny gain self-esteem and deal with ridicule from her ""friends."" At one point, the snotty girls invite Jenny over to model a swimsuit, predictably leading to humiliation and the girl to gorge herself with doughnuts. Jonathan tells her the girls aren't her friends and helps her see that she has many other gifts people appreciate. Meanwhile, the angel sees that the jock (named Jack) that Jenny is tutoring needs to have his ego shaken, particularly since he considers the girl unsightly due to her weight. Jack had wanted to have a pretty cheerleader help him, but of course Jonathan can see where that is headed.

By September 1862, the South appears to be on the verge of victory. President Lincoln wants to emancipate all slaves but recognizes he needs a victory on the battlefield before he can do so. Dissatisfied with his current commander, he sends George Hazard to sound out Gen. Ulysses S. Grant on whether he would take on overall command of the Northern forces. After the disgruntled former overseer kills a runaway slave from Mont Royal, the family decides to offer safe passage to any of their slaves who wish to leave. Soon after, Ashton arrives and is shocked to find Brett and Madeline working in the fields. She also reveals to Madeline that she knows her great secret, which she will make public unless she leaves. Virgilia is now working in a Union field hospital and is admonished by the chief nurse, Mrs. Neal, to treat all soldiers the same. Charles and Billy come face-to-face on the battlefield.

The ebb and flow of war has begun with victories and defeats on both sides. Brett and Semiramis make it safely back to Mont Royal, after a dangerous encounter with Northern troops. When Orry hears that Justin has abducted Madeline from Mont Royal, he rescues her and they are soon married. Virgilia meets Dorothy Dix who accepts her as a nurse on the basis of Congressman Sam Greene's recommendation. Orry needs to stop the blockade runners and is almost captured by a Northern patrol. By the purest luck, he meets George on the trail. Bent has ambitions of megalomaniacal proportions and has every intention of gaining power in the South, fully expecting his new lover, Ashton, to be at his side. His scorned former paramour puts him out of business for a while. Charles is wounded and makes his way to Augusta Barclay's farm where he recuperates. At Lehigh Station, Stanley Hazard, egged on by his ever ambitious wife and against his better judgment, gets involved in shady deals.

Dan operates on Jessica like he did on Stephanie 7 years earlier. Stephanie is shocked when Johnno tells her he is Tom's father making him not her son. Jake wants Jilly to get rid of Olive for good. Olive angers Jilly by surprising her whilst she is in the bath. She notes how convenient it is that no more snakes have turned up since she agreed to let Olive stay. Angelo proposes to Sarah. Jilly realizes how lonely she is and tries to get the Harper's's back in her life. Jessica wants nothing more to do with her but Sarah agrees to have her marriage to Angelo at Eden. Dave is injured and Stephanie is forced to face her fears and swim across a crocodile infested river. After she makes it Dave reveals to her there are no crocodiles in that part of the river but Stephanie has faced her fears. A flying doctor is called in, and Dave insists he needs to go to hospital which is just a plan to get Stephanie to leave and get back to living her life. He gives her a small fortune of opals, which

Olive conveniently shows up and saves Jilly's life. When the police arrive they can find no trace of the snake. Tom is in a coma and Sarah sits by his bed side hoping he will recover still not knowing they are not related. Stephanie and Johhno go to stay at Dave Welles place who helped nurse Stephanie back to health 7 years ago and ponder their next move. Jilly manages to blackmail Jake into making her General Manager of the company. Another snake turns up this time in Jilly's bed. Jessica recognizes it as non-poisonous and takes care of it. The police turn up again, but Jessica denies there was ever a snake, making Jilly look delusional. Jilly throws Jessica out of Eden and she goes to stay with the Harper's. A memorial service is held for Stephanie and Jake declares to Anton he is going to marry Jilly as it's the only way to control her. Dave tells Stephanie she cant hide way for ever. Sarah quits Tara's now Jilly is in charge but Jilly persuades Cassie to stay on.
