Elaine is embarrassed that she is a cab driver, especially since Mary heads a prestigious ad agency, so to save face, Elaine makes up a story about having a wonderful boyfriend who is a Columbia University professor. Over the next few days, Mary calls Elaine to try to arrange a dinner with their respective boyfriend's, but Elaine keeps making excuses, as she is ashamed that she made up a lie about having a boyfriend. When Elaine is about ready to confess her lie to Mary over the phone, Alex grabs the phone, pretending to be Elaine's boyfriend, and accepts her dinner invitation for that evening. At dinner, Alex is so charming, in an effort to make their relationship look very loving, that all of a sudden, Mary and her boyfriend become jealous that they don't have such an exciting relationship. Polly Carmody, a young 9 year old girl, is murdered and found in a refuse bin. The police quickly pick up a suspect but Lt. Alex Markasian thinks that he doesn't fit the profile of a child murderer. He is much more interested in the fact that the 'father' of Polly is in fact her stepfather, and has only been in the house for a couple of months. When the arrested suspects blood type doesn't match the blood found on the victioms clothing Donald Thompson, the stepfather, becomes an even more likely suspect. This is made even more likely when Alex and Quincy discover some disturbing things in Thompsons' background.

Blake's plan now is to take Walter and Matthew's rig when they're in trouble. Krystle doesn't like Blake's methods in his work. She pawns an emerald necklace and loans Matthew the money to help him. She makes a false copy so Blake won't understand it's gone. In the end, Matthew and Krystle kiss, but Krystle breaks it off and leaves.

Adam and Mary move back to Walnut Grove so that Adam can start a law practice there. Adam's first case involves a person who has been swindling people in Walnut Grove. Adam believes the person is innocent until he finds out the truth. Adam convinces the jury to have pity on this man who was just trying to help out his family before he dies.
