Family friend Gerardo Otegui offers to give Alberto the money to save Velvet, but only if Alberto agrees to marry Gerardo's daughter, Cristina, who has been in love with Alberto for years. Alberto initially refuses, but when Ana learns of the deal, she breaks off their engagement and urges Alberto to marry Cristina if it will save Velvet. Alberto reluctantly agrees and becomes engaged to Cristina, while a heartbroken Ana prepares to leave Madrid for a new job out of town.
