Meanwhile, Naomi brings a stray dog home and her and Vint try to find a home for it, while trying to keep it hid from Mama. They lock it up in the garage, where Mama keeps hearing it bark but they convince her she's losing her mind. After intercepting a series of phone messages, Mama becomes convinced there gonna send her off, because she's going crazy. But all is soon revealed, and the dog finds a home at the senior citizens center.

Two children trapped in an abusive home stumble upon a cursed playhouse. The playhouse lets them enter a fantastical world of clown and parties in return for them luring in a child. The trail of missing runaways attact our trio's attention. Micki and Ryan have to enter the house where they confront its sinister presence. They manage to convince the two children to reject the house, which frees the other trapped children. The missing children are returned to their homes and the two siblings are put into a foster home.

A Man Called Hawk
Season 1, Episode 1
Hawk searches for an old friend and fellow Vietnam War vet turned stressed-out government operative named David Tracton, who has become a killing machine. Hawk's old boss, Col. Edward Stoller, director of covert field operations in U.S. Intelligence asks Hawk to look for Tracton and bring him in before it's too late. Hawk enlists the help of Tracton's half-Vietnamese daughter to save his friend. Tracton is ultimately shot to death at the Jefferson Memorial after Hawk, unaware that he's being followed, leads him there. In this episode, Hawk gives the Old Man a signed, first-edition copy of WEB DuBois' 1903 book ""Souls of Black Folk."" Angela Bassett also appears in this episode as a high school teacher who could become Hawk's love interest.

When Mary and Lester go to parent's night a Brenda's school, Mary does not like the playfulness of her history teacher, or the fact that he does not give tests or homework. She asks the principal to monitor his class, but the principal fires him. When Brenda finds out that Mary was the ""loud-mouth"" parent that squealed, she is mad at Mary, but also feels sorry for Dylan, who she says is a good teacher. Meanwhile, Sandra is a sales representative for Luscious Lingerie, and when her door-to-door sales are not profitable, she asks Mary if she can host a lingerie party at her apt. Mary agrees, but only if Dylan can assist her, to make some money for himself. The party is successful, but Dylan says his heart is with teaching. When she finds out that Brenda and Calvin remember what Dylan's teaching them, she talks to the principal to get his job back. Dylan winds up moving into 227.

Freddie grapples with writer's block as she works on a creative writing assignment. Kim encourages her to take a break and come to a party, which Dwayne and Ron have organized in honor of a popular rib joint's final night in business. Whitley has resolved to eat only healthy foods, but finds herself tempted by the ribs. Freddie gets drunk and claims to have rediscovered her ""muse."" After Walter breaks up the party, she steals some booze and ends up passed out in the library. She awakes with a hangover the next morning and discovers that the paper she wrote while drunk is terrible. Walter lies about his culinary abilities to impress Jaleesa. Lettie and Mr. Gaines try to teach him to cook to ensure that his dinner with Jaleesa isn't a total disaster.
