Stephanie has won a class spelling bee at school, and she is now in the finals for best speller in the 4th grade. Stephanie's success in spelling makes Michelle want to learn how to read. At the 4th grade finals, the spelling bee ends up narrowed down to two students -- Stephanie and the "Human Dictionary" Davey Chu. Stephanie is severely disappointed when Davey wins, so she challenges Davey to another spelling bee, one on one, this time in the Tanner house with Danny being the judge. Once again, Davey wins, and Stephanie becomes even angrier until Danny tells her that even if she loses at things sometimes, he's still proud of her for putting forth her best effort. Meanwhile, Joey needs a piece of music to introduce cartoons on "The Ranger Joe Show", and he talks Jesse into trying to write the piece of music the show needs.

Before going away with Victoria on a little trip, Lovejoy gets Jane to agree to take in the Flowers. Then, though, the organizer of the planned gig runs off with the money. One of the band decides to sell his valuable antique harp to make good some of the shortfall, but before Lovejoy can arrrange the sale the harp also disappears.Lovejoy works his way up to proposing to Victoria, but she turns him down and goes back to South America.

Her replacement is Alistair Dimple, an impoverished actor, pretending to be a teacher. Alistair inspires the students to learn by doing role-playing and, in turn, inspires Hefty to write a book about the island. Alec finds out Dimples ""identity"", but keeps quiet as Avonlea school battles it out for the History Championship competition against rival Carmody.

The Planeteers investigate and find out Looten Plunder and Argos Bleak are behind the problem. They are making it look like the transit line is haunted so that they can profit from massive freeway system and auto-related businesses. Thanks to teamwork Captain Planet and the Planeteers get things "back on track"

Brandon joins the track team, bumping Steve from the sprint relay. Many of his teammates dislike Brandon because he wrote negative articles about the football team. Brandon considers quitting the paper because he is tired of tearing people apart. Several of the athletes are taking steroids to improve their performance. They ask Steve to participate in their ""program,"" which causes him to develop mood swings. Brandon and Andrea decide to conduct an investigation, and Kelly's friend Kyle provides them with details. The track coach cancels all practices until the steroid users come forward. The other guys suspect that Steve was Brandon's source, and threaten to beat him up unless he takes the rap. Brandon allows Brenda to drive his car, but she gets into an accident. The other driver claims to have developed whiplash, and files a lawsuit. Brenda foils her plans when she catches her dancing in her living room. Music: ""Dancing in the Street"" by The Mamas and the Papas (?)
