The girls are students of a school called SOLA, led by Shabana Basij-Rasikh, a remarkable Afghan woman whose commitment to educating girls began under the first Taliban regime when she attended a secret school disguised as a boy. SOLA is the Afghan word for peace and also short for School of Leadership Afghanistan. SOLA, Afghanistan's first boarding school for girls, managed to evacuate all its students and staff after the Taliban takeover, making the girls of SOLA among the only Afghan middle school and high school girls in the world today with access to a formal education.
