After observing the depressing lack of talent at the cafe's open mike night, the group persuades Kyle to sing the following week. Overton agrees to perform his stand-up comedy act in exchange for Kyle's participation. Kyle starts out well as he performs ""When I Fall in Love,"" but begins stuttering when Max enters in a low-cut gown and sits directly in front of him. He runs out of the cafe, thus ensuring Overton's victory. Max teases him mercilessly about his failure, while Overton believes that Kyle's unresolved feelings for Max are responsible for the incident. He urges him to get back on stage to prove himself. Kyle delivers a brilliant performance of ""My Funny Valentine."" He sings most of the song directly to a swooning Max. While the girls needle Max, Kyle thanks Overton for his advice, which he believes has freed him from Max's influence. At that moment, Max looks over her shoulder and smiles at Kyle seductively. He returns her gaze. ""Oh Lord! There they go again!"" Overton sighs.
Donnel is having a birthday party and brags about all the dancing and cool people who will be there. Harry says that he knows how to dance so Dee Dee feels left out because he doesn't. He asks Alfie how to dance and learns. When he goes to the party and starts dancing he comes to find out that Donnel and Harry don't know how to dance either.
Richard and Charlie are security guards working in a morgue. They are offered five hundred dollars by a doctor who is trying to capture the soul of each dying person before it goes to heaven. When their boss figures out what's happening Richard is forced to kill him but he kills Charlie too. The doctor succeeds in capturing Charlie's soul. Charlie comes back out for revenge.

Saul is a vibrant and funny man who suffers from Alzheimer's Disease. Steve's friendship with Saul causes him to appreciate what he has and stop whining about his legal difficulties. Saul also encourages Steve to let go of his anger against Rush, as he relates his rocky relationship with the daughter he lost tragically. Dylan does not wish to contest the drunken driving charge against him, but Jesse urges him to plea bargain. He receives probation and a suspended license. Andrea has another meeting with Peter at the laundromat. They learn each other's marital status when Peter is on-call during Hannah's medical emergency, yet still seem attracted to one another. David and Clare take over as organizers of the Peach Pit After Dark. Ray balks at an opening night gig; he confesses to Donna that he has stage fright.
